Carrying. A signage installation by Curt Belshe and Lise Prown The prevalence of guns in our country has a divisive political and social history that is now playing out on college campuses in a response to recent incidents of campus gun violence. A vocal new movement is now calling for allowing adult (21+) students with licenses to carry concealed weapons on college campuses. Eleven U.S. universities now allow concealed weapons on campus, nine of them public. Last year, 17 states considered campus carry legislation, but none enacted them. Concealed and open carry laws are rapidly changing across the nation and gun control opponents are making inroads state by state. In July 2009, The Wall Street Journal noted how the gun lobby has successfully pushed guns to more and more places, yet has suffered 34 consecutive defeats on students carrying guns into classrooms.

This is an installation of 50 signs (one for each state) that conveys the complex rules and regulations that pertain to concealed weapons across the nation. These signs will reflect the density of meta-data the surrounds the act of purchasing, transporting and using handguns. Juxtaposing the cool dispassionate nature of info graphics with the grim realities of an armed citizenry.

These expressly “cute and cartoon-like charms will exist in extreme contrast to the surrounding natural environment. Many of these animals live on a collision course with humans causing impact on people daily via contact of different kinds i.e. rabies, Lyme disease, car accidents etc.The cartoony style of this piece points to point towards the human tendency to anthropomorphize nature and to point out the gap between our media saturated lives and actual nature. We are on a collision course with the nature world and it is always changing our perceptions of nature, landscape and location. At the same time we function at an increasingly great remove from the natural world. This piece points to this disconnect.

A series of 3 signs and augmented reality models about the pending natural gas drilling in the nearby New York State Watershed. The signs show 3 models of what Fracking Drills look like and they will mark the location where viewers with smartphones can view an artwork with their phones. Many environmental and human health concerns associated with hydraulic fracturing include the contamination of ground water, risks to air quality, the migration of gases and hydraulic fracturing chemicals to the surface, and the potential mishandling of waste. The potential costs associated with possible environmental clean-up processes, loss of land value and human and animal health concerns are undetermined. For the first time, in a study published in 2010, the EPA has discovered contaminants in drinking water including: arsenic, copper, vanadium, and adamanatanes. The Virtual Sculptures can be viewed in-the-round on iPhone 3GS (and higher) and Android phones using the Fractoids layer in the free application Layar.

The amount of oil is estimated to be between 17-30 million gallons, approximately 50% more oil than the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Unlike spills like the Exxon Valdez , the Greenpoint Oil Release was not an episodic event, but rather an accretion of oil from many of the refineries on Newtown Creek. The out of sight nature of this particular environment disaster resonates with sight unseen qualities of making an augmented reality artwork.

However, periodic grasshopper outbreaks on rangeland can result in competition with other herbivores for vegetation and lead to grasshopper dispersal into crops. Of the 400 species of grasshoppers in the Western United States, fewer than 2 dozen are capable of causing significant economic damage to crops and forage.

Curt Belshe and Lise Prown collaborate on an interactive augmented reality piece called A New Dialect. The work invites viewers to trigger Augmented Reality (AR) images by holding up different image cards in front of an iPad outfacing camera. The cards, printed with different text messages, call up AR images on the iPad, including text bubbles, audio, short animations and videos that appear next to or above 3D printed figures that are texting within the vitrine. Texting is a pervasive form of communication and has changed behavior throughout the culture. The augmentations examine the complexities of of texting culture, linguistics, communications and miscommunications as they relate to etiquette, language, social interaction, safety and legislation.

We would installed several metal street signs around the area near and within the Wassaic Project that would contain information about the old New York Central Railroad Company. The signs were accompanied by an Augmented Reality Model that could be viewed via Smartphone of a scale locomotive sitting on the train tracks that divide the town. This virtual sculpture of an old locomotive will provide a historically relevant juxtaposition with the modern surroundings.

Pollution Dieties
These pieces are based on the long-standing artistic tradition in both eastern and western cultures, using visual art as a means to make visible the mysterious and the invisible. The figures float in a darkened sky. They are serious, comical, and scary. They surround and weigh-down on two female figures (a detail from Giuseppe Cesari’s famous painting of the Roman myth, Diana and Actaeon). They consist of heavy metals, lead and arsenic, mercury vapors, green-house-gases, agri-business, coal and oil. Some are ancient problems, lead and mercury, some are new problems, green-house-gasses, agri-business, all are unsolved difficulties faced by our society.

My intent with this piece is to make visible the complicated and abstract issues of our time. By personifying these complex issues as “demons” I am attempting to develop an awareness of, and a dialogue on, the relationships amongst these “modern demons” and ourselves.
